Workers' Compensation, Brain Injury, Serious Personal Injury, and Immigration
Al Martin has been practicing law for 25 years. He has tried hundreds of job injury cases in counties throughout South Carolina. He has handled many complex cases involving brain injury, incomplete paraplegia, amputations, asbestos inhalation, repetitive trauma, chemical exposure, defective products, post-traumatic stress disorder, Medicare and Medicaid interaction, electrocution, and death. He is often contacted by other lawyers to provide advice on difficult work accident cases. However, it's not just experience that makes Al different. In 1991, one of Al's family member's suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury and was in a coma for several weeks. As a new lawyer then, he was called on to help with the numerous legal issues that arose from that tragic accident. He did gain early legal experience, but more importantly empathy for the financial and emotional toll these accidents have on a family. In 1994, when he finished his active-duty service with the U.S. Army defending soldiers at courts-martial, he returned to South Carolina and private practice. Over the next 11 years, Al worked with several insurance defense law firms, eventually becoming the managing partner over a firm's Workers' Compensation department. In 2005, Al helped establish the firm of Martin & Martin Attorneys, P.A. Since that time, he has devoted his practice to representing injured persons. He believes his past representation of companies and insurance carriers gives him a unique perspective into the way claims are evaluated and defended. He tries to use this as an advantage for his clients. He is grateful and appreciates the trust his past and current clients place in him. While his main focus remains client satisfaction, Al has gained the respect of his fellow lawyers and judges. Since 1998, he has been selected for the Martindale-Hubbell “AV-rating” by his peers in the legal community every year. The AV-rating is the highest available and only awarded to less than 5% of attorneys nationwide. Al also has a “10.0 Superb” rating from AVVO, the highest awarded by the online rating service.
Al grew up in Fort Mill, South Carolina, the youngest of four and the only boy. His father was an FBI agent and his mother was a high school teacher. He is a 1987 graduate of The Citadel and received his law degree from Mercer University in 1991. (You may recognize Mercer as the school that beat Duke University in the first round of the NCAA Basketball Tournament this year.) He is married to the lovely and talented Laura and they have three children, a girl and two boys. They have lived in Greenville since 1995. Al enjoys coaching soccer, watching his children play soccer, and watching just about anybody else play soccer for that matter. He is a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church.
Al is admitted to practice in South Carolina, Georgia, the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina, the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia, and the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is a member of the South Carolina Bar (Workers' Compensation Section), the State Bar of Georgia, and the Greenville County Bar.
