A jury's award against Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center is thought to be one of the largest damage amounts for a Coles County civil trial.

After a trial lasting more than a week, the jury awarded $14 million in damages to Mark Allen, a 46-year-old Mattoon man who claimed the hospital failed to find a spinal infection that led to paralysis.

Allen sued the hospital in 2013 and the suit's contentions were that doctors there failed to find the infection during two emergency room visits for neck pain and fever in September 2012.
