D.J. Banovitz was born in Chicago, Illinois. At age 7 on a family ski trip, he determined to make Colorado his home. After graduating from Colorado State University in 1990, he lived in the mountains for a year. Returning to Chicago for law school, he attended the John Marshall Law School, concentrated his studies on advanced trial advocacy and tort (injury) law, graduating in 1994.
