Before founding Larwick Law Firm, Derek was a shareholder at one of the most recognized and successful law firms in the State of Oregon.

Derek is a Pacific Northwest native and the son of a logger and a public school teacher. He grew up in Southwest Washington, felling timber and bucking logs with his father. As a young man, Derek became a Wildland Firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service.  He supervised other firefighters and developed a deep appreciation for the safety rules that protect workers and protect everyone in our community.

When Derek was 26 years old, his 22-year-old cousin was killed on the job as a power lineman because his employer violated key safety rules that protect workers. The employer took shortcuts and chose not to ground the utility truck that day. The worker's compensation law provided no recourse for Derek's cousin or family, and there was no legal action that would discourage the employer from creating other dangerous conditions. That powerless feeling led Derek to pursue a career in law. He committed himself to using the civil justice system to hold negligent and reckless corporations and individuals accountable when they injure or kill others.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

After law school, Derek clerked for Judge Alfred Goodwin of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Currently, Derek serves on the faculty of the University of Oregon School of Law, where he teaches a course focused on advanced legal writing.

Derek's professional memberships include:

American Association for Justice
Oregon Trial Lawyers Association
Oregon State Bar
Oregon State Bar Products Liability Section (Executive Committee Member)
Lane County Bar Association
American Constitution Society
Admitted to practice in all Oregon state and federal trial courts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit

After earning a bachelor's degree in Biology and Spanish, Derek earned a law degree from the University of Oregon School of Law. Derek was elected and served as the Editor in Chief of Oregon Law Review, and he graduated in the top five percent of his class.

He earned accolades, including the Best Brief Award at the American Constitution Society Appellate Competition at UCLA Law School, and National Runner Up at the American Bar Association Labor and Employment Trial Competition at the U.S. District Court in Chicago. Derek also competed in moot court competitions at Stanford Law School, coached a moot court team, and participated in the Texas Young Lawyers Trial Competition.

Derek worked as a judicial extern for Judge John V. Acosta of the U.S. District Court of Oregon, and he was the honored recipient of the James T. Landye Trial Advocacy Scholarship and the Lois I. Baker Academic Scholarship.
