Mr. Douthit is a highly experienced trial and appellate lawyer with more than 30 years of experience in the areas of product liability, catastrophic personal injury, medical malpractice, commercial/business litigation and military law. He has been lead attorney in nearly 200 trials in state, federal and military courts across the United States. Mr. Douthit's areas of practice are more fully set forth in the Areas of Practice portion of this biography. In addition to being currently licensed to practice law in Missouri and Georgia, he has also appeared in cases pro hac vice in dozens of state and federal jurisdictions throughout the country. Further, Mr. Douthit has also argued appeals to state and federal appellate courts.
Mr. Douthit began his legal career legal career clerking for the Presiding Judge of the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals. He then entered the United States Army in 1979 as a JAG lawyer and was stationed in Savannah, Georgia. While in the Army, Evan spent two years as a prosecutor trying complex felony criminal trials. He was then transferred to the U.S. Army Trial Defense Service where he traveled to Army posts throughout the South defending clients who were charged with major felonies. In 1983, he joined a civil litigation firm in Kansas City where he was retained by a number of large corporations, including some Fortune 500 companies, in the defense of products liability claims as their local, regional and national counsel. These cases involved claims of product defects in, among other things, construction scaffolding, power tools, automobiles, tires, helmets (motorcycle, police, football, equine and bicycle) and in a variety of recreational vehicles such as motorcycles, ATVs, and personal watercraft. He also represented healthcare providers such as physicians, nurses and hospitals in medical negligence cases.
By 1991, Mr. Douthit was also being retained by persons who had experienced catastrophic personal losses caused by defective products or the negligence of others, as well as businesses that had been economically damaged by the wrongful acts of other businesses and individuals.
Then, in 1995, he became one of the founding members of Douthit Frets Rouse Gentile & Rhodes, LLC. He now spends a substantial portion of his professional time representing people or the families of people who have been seriously injured or killed by defective products or by the negligence of others. As an example, his clients have included dozens of children, and families of deceased children, who received catastrophic brain and spinal cord injuries, because of poorly designed, defective child safety seats. He has also worked with clients that have suffered life-altering losses because of vehicle occupant protection systems that, instead of preventing injuries, actually caused them.
Mr. Douthit brings to the representation of his clients the unique perspective of a highly experienced plaintiff's lawyer who was also a highly experienced defense lawyer who served as local, regional and national counsel for some of the world's largest and most sophisticated vehicular and vehicular product manufacturers, including Bridgestone, Chrysler, General Motors, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and VW. Mr. Douthit also represents businesses and individuals in commercial and business related litigation.
He has also served as a speaker at national seminars and conventions on the issues surrounding the all too common failure of child safety seats.
