James J. McHugh, Jr. has been selected among the National Trial Lawyers Association’s Top 100 Trial Lawyers in PA and NJ (2008 through 2012). NJ Super Lawyer 2014. He has also been selected by judges and attorneys for numerous awards, including “Super Lawyer” in both Pennsylvania (9 consecutive years 2005 through 2013) and New Jersey (2006), Top 100 lawyers in Pennsylvania (2013, 2010, 2007, 2005), Top 100 lawyers in Philadelphia (2013, 2012, 2010, 2007, 2005), and maintains an AVVO rating of “Superb” based on professional conduct and experience. James has scored many triumphs throughout his years of practice in the mass tort, construction litigation, products liability, and personal injury areas- including medical malpractice, nursing home abuse, slip and fall injuries, defamation, civil rights, employment discrimination, auto accidents, and general negligence. His legal experience includes a myriad of mass tort matters including Baycol, Zyprexa, Benzene, Ephedra, Welding Rods, Vioxx, Gadolinium, Transvaginal Mesh, Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella, and Beyaz, Pradaxa, SJS, and Mirena.
Jim is the former head of the Pharmaceutical Mass Tort and Class Action Department at The Beasley Firm, LLC. He also worked in the construction industry for over ten years, where he designed and installed technical complex heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, pumps, metering, and piping systems. During enrollment at Drexel University full time, and after graduation, Mr. McHugh operated his family’s plumbing and heating business. Subsequently, during his tenure as a Project Manager for a major mechanical contractor, Mr. McHugh supervised several high-cost, high-visibility projects such as renovations at the Philadelphia International Airport. These experiences equipped Mr. McHugh with the analytical and technical skills to fully assess product liability and construction cases with a keen eye for details. Jim’s engineering degree and extensive construction and engineering experience arms him with firsthand knowledge in the litigation of large-scale explosions, construction site catastrophes, premises liability, contractual disputes, and products liability cases.
After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Drexel University, Jim graduated magna cum laude from Villanova University School of Law, where he was inducted into the Order of the Coif. Jim went on to work with the late James E. Beasley, Sr., whom many considered the best trial lawyer in America. Jim Beasley and Jim McHugh shared in many successful legal endeavors, including a $907 million verdict against Ira Einhorn for the murder of Holly Maddux. Jim McHugh has secured seven and eight-figure recoveries for clients by both verdict and settlement, including one of the highest confidential settlements in the history of Philadelphia. Jim’s success continues and includes recoveries on behalf of hundreds of clients from pharmaceutical giants, such as Eli Lilly and Bayer. Mr. McHugh retained and developed a vital expert who testified in a recent New Jersey Vioxx trial, resulting in a verdict of over $4 million dollars in compensatory damages and $9 million dollars in punitive damages.
Jim authored an article published in the Villanova Law Review and has assisted in editing numerous other publications. He served on the Advisory Committee for the Penn Public Service Program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Law. As a legal professional, Mr. McHugh has lectured around the country to groups that include lawyers, doctors and various unions. He has lectured at national and regional legal seminars and schools, and was a presenter during the first live national mass tort internet seminar.
Jim was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA and now lives in Moorestown, NJ. When he is not practicing law, his time is devoted to his wife Colette, sons Albert, James III and Cole, and daughter, Sophia. Jim is actively involved in his community and assistant coaches his sons’ football and lacrosse teams. He also enjoys quality time with his parents and brothers. Jim feels privileged when given the opportunity to occasionally work together with his three brothers- Attorney Walter J. McHugh, Attorney Edward B. McHugh, and Dr. Dennis P. McHugh on a professional level.
