Judge Luther W. Simmons, Jr., (Ret.) is a Shareholder in the national mass tort and consumer protection firm Simmons Hanly Conroy. Judge Simmons is a retired Illinois Circuit Court Judge. At Simmons Hanly Conroy, Judge Simmons works on the Complex Litigation and Asbestos Teams, among other responsibilities.
A life-long native of Alton, Illinois, the national headquarters of Simmons Hanly Conroy, Judge Simmons is the father of five. His daughter, Tara Evans, is an attorney with the national firm, Thompson Hine, which is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.
Judge Simmons brings a wealth of experience to Simmons Hanly Conroy. As a litigator, Judge Simmons tried many serious cases to verdict, including civil cases, serious felonies, and complex construction cases. Judge Simmons is also an experienced trial judge. As a trial judge, he presided over numerous jury trials.
Judge Simmons is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts and the St. Louis University School of Law. Early on in his career, he was the first African American Public Defender in Madison County Illinois. He served as an Assistant Madison County State’s Attorney and also as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Illinois.
Judge Simmons has been the recipient of numerous awards in his career, including the NAACP’s Community Service Award, the 100 Black Men’s Presidential Award, and the Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award. He continues to mentor and counsel scores of minority youth in his community.
