Melinda Young is a native of Hutchinson, Kansas. She received a B.S. degree from Friends University and she received her law degree from Washburn University School of Law. During law school, Ms. Young was a two time published author and an Editor for the Washburn Law Journal. She received the prestigious John F. Kuether Award for Outstanding Comment for her publication Discrimination for the Sake of the Children.
Ms. Young started working at Bretz Law Offices at its inception. She originally worked as a paralegal and helped start Bretz Law Offices in 1997. Her love of the law, and particularly her love of helping injured clients inspired her to pursue her law degree. Following graduation from law school, she gained additional experience practicing law in Iowa until returning to her hometown of Hutchinson and rejoining the firm. She joined the firm as a partner in 2013 and the firm name was changed to Bretz & Young.
Ms. Young currently handles all types of injury claims, including automobile accidents, wrongful death, nursing home negligence, workers compensation, product liability, premises liability, and employment law. She recently obtained the largest judgment in Iowa for an intentional infliction of emotional distress claim arising out of a wrongful termination suit.
Ms. Young is licensed in Kansas and Iowa, and by the United States District Courts in Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri. She is recognized as a Rising Star by Super Lawyers and Outstanding Young Lawyer by KC Magazine. She is a member of the Kansas Association of Justice and Kansas Women Attorneys Association. She is also a member of the community programs Cause for Paws, a board member for Sexual Assualt/Domestic Violence Center, Inc. in Reno County. She previously served as a board member of The American Red Cross.
